FAQ

How much does a piece cost?

While prices start from £325 including VAT, pricing is always scaled relative to the complexity of the image. The number of faces, the level of photographic detail, and the physical size of the portrait all impact the time spent on each commission. For more information on pricing, please get in touch.

How big is each piece?

I offer artwork in four sizes: Approx. A4, A3, A2 and A1. Once framed, these will be larger than the aforementioned sizes.

how long does a piece normally take?

Generally speaking, lead times for creating the artwork are 2-3 weeks once a final photographic image has been selected and agreed upon. An additional 3 weeks is required for framing and delivery. Occasionally, and depending on the number of works progressing through the studio, I can offer a fast-track service for an additional fee, reducing the overall lead time to 4 weeks.

what do i need to take into consideration when supplying a photo?

The selection of the photographic image is key. Not all will be suitable for this method of portraiture. As a piece of art, this is something that you will hopefully hang with pride, so take your time to find something you really love. I recommend you supply a shortlist of favourites from which we can collaborate together and choose the one that will work best. Resolution is important as the higher the quality of photo, the more information will translate onto the final artwork at scale.

So what exactly should i bear in mind?

In terms of selection criteria, images that work well...

ARE:

Dynamic and visually interesting

Natural in composition (i.e. not too posed)

Well defined in terms of features and characteristics of the subject(s)

High resolution (shot with mobile phone is normally fine but camera even better)

Rich in contrast of light (natural light is usually best)

Have some context in terms of background to play with

Either colour or black & white

ARE NOT:

Shot too close to the face(s)

Blurred (in motion)

Low resolution (poor quality)

Cropped too tightly

Back-lit (with face(s) cast in shadow)

Shot in low light

what are the framing options?

All my framing is bespoke and uses conservation techniques. The signature option floats the painting 5mm off the back of a box frame to create a dynamic texture. A coloured spacer inside the frame is added to create further depth and visual impact. These frames allow for the deckled edges of the paper to be shown. Other options are of course available.
